FAQs – Find out about Climate Change and becoming Carbon Neutral

Below we answer some of the most commonly asked questions about Climate Change, becoming Carbon Neutral and NetZero. If you would like more help from Sandland Packaging about reducing your carbon emissions through using CarbonNeutral certified packaging please contact us.

Why should we care about Climate Change?

The temperature of the Earth is rising, and the consensus is that our use of Greenhouse Gases GHG) is a direct cause. The rise in temperature has become known as Climate Change and we are all being asked to change our behaviour to stop this happening. Some of the effects of Climate Change include rising sea levels, extreme weather and the reduction in food and water availability.

Why do we need to act now?

The UK Government is committed to achieving NetZero by 2050 and this has been enshrined in law. Right now, not enough is being done and other incentives, such as tax breaks, and penalties, such as taxes, may be used to achieve this.

What does CarbonNeutral mean?

CarbonNeutral means you taken as many positive steps as possible within your business to reduce carbon emissions, and have purchased carbon credits to offset the carbon which you cannot reduce currently.

How does a company calculate its Carbon Emissions?

These rules are set by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. The Greenhouse Gas Protocol splits greenhouse gas emissions into three categories: Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3.

Many organisations cover Scopes 1 and 2 only as covering Scope 3 is difficult and expensive.

Your company’s packaging emissions can be recorded as zero when you buy boxes from Sandland Packaging.

Sandland Packaging are reporting on ALL 15 categories in Scope 3.

What are Sandland Packaging doing about Climate Change?

We have achieved carbon neutral status by calculating and offsetting all of Scope 1 and 2 and all 15 categories in Scope 3. All Sandland Packaging products are certified Carbon Neutral.

How do we compare with other packaging companies?

We’re pleased to say more and more packaging companies are becoming Carbon Neutral. However, be aware that you are able to say you are Carbon Neutral if you have just begun your journey and have only covered Scopes 1 and 2.

Sandland Packaging have covered all Scopes 1 and 2 and all of our Scope 3 activities which typically means we are dealing with 10x more carbon than our competitors. This is why any product bought from us can be counted as zero emissions on your calculations.

How does this benefit our customers?

The real message to market around Sandland Packaging PAS2060 CarbonNeutral certification is that ALL GHG emissions have been accounted for and ALL Products are certified Carbon Neutral and therefore have ZERO emissions.

This means when a company purchases from Sandland Packaging, they can report zero emissions in their own GHG accounting on the purchases, thus reporting a reduction in emissions.

What else is Sandland Packaging doing?

This is part of an ongoing programme to reduce our Carbon emissions. Our target is to achieve NetZero by 2030, 20 years ahead of the legal requirement. We’re taking responsibility TODAY for tomorrow’s NetZero solution

What is the wider market doing?

We’re pleased the wider market is starting a journey to becoming Carbon Neutral. However, the vast majority are not offsetting all emissions and their products are not carbon neutral.
